2025 Ford Mustang Shelby – We’re offering an early look at what Ford’s top-of-the-range performance Mustang could look like. The answer is: great.
The new seventh-generation 2024 Ford Mustang really pulled the trigger when it was revealed last week, keeping the dream of manual-displacement V-8 muscle cars alive for at least a few more years. For the past few generations, Ford has developed the Shelby GT500 trim as a sort of ranger in the Mustang lineup, offering more power than the standard V-8 ‘Stang with the help of a supercharger. We can expect heavy use of carbon fiber, heavy suspension and chassis upgrades, revised bodywork with more aggressive aero and a massive rear wing, and of course the signature GT500 racing stripes – here are a few glimpses of what the 2026 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 could be like. We also threw in a version built like the latest Hertz GT500-H, because who doesn’t love a rental car with 900 horsepower?

Although it was a bit surprising that we didn’t see a hybrid or electrified powertrain for this new generation, as was long rumored, Ford still offered something fresh: the all-new Ford Mustang Dark Horse performance model. Dark Horse will offer the most powerful 5.0-liter V-8 the company has ever tuned for a road car, with an estimated 500 horsepower.

The Dark Horse also borrows some upgrades previously reserved only for Shelby Performance Mustang models like the GT500, including its carbon fiber wheels and specially modified piston rods, without getting a full Shelby overhaul. It looks like the new Dark Horse model takes over the mid-range performance of this next-generation muscle car, previously held by performance trims like the 2021 Mustang Mach 1, which offers 20 more horsepower than the sixth-generation Mustang GT it’s based on. That still leaves plenty of room for Shelby models like the GT500 to take it even further.
The outgoing supercharged 5.2-liter “Predator” V-8 powering the GT500 makes 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet, and we expect it to get even more ridiculous with the next generation in a few years. The outgoing GT500 offers a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (no manual selection), nice adaptive dampers, up to 16.5-inch brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport tires wrapped around lightweight carbon fiber wheels, and we can expect a similar setup for the new car.
Inside, the GT500 will reportedly get Shelby-specific Recaro front seats, the option of a weight-saving rear seat, as well as plenty of carbon fiber trim and construction.
Reported via “sources” that the seventh-generation Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will debut in 2025 or the 2026 model year, with the current sixth-generation Mustang-based GT500 being phased out this year. That sounds plausible, so we probably won’t have to wait too long for the debut of the news.
